Quotes From Books About Books

If books weren’t so relatable already, that feeling is multiplied when characters break the fourth wall of reading and talk about their own interest and love of books within their stories. The topic of books being brought up within a book is something I always geek out over when I am reading, and so I finally decided to compile a list of my favorite book-related mentions across literature.

On the power of reading

One must always be careful of books,” said Tessa, “and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

– Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel

Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”

– John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

I was burning through books every day – stories about people and places I’d never heard of. They were perhaps the only thing that kept me from teetering into utter despair.”

– Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury

On the importance of libraries

I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”

– Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

That’s what Hermione does,” said Ron, shrugging. “When in doubt, go to the library.”

– J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

On the preferences of reading

And what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversations?”

– Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

I’m not really a book person”

“That might be the most idiotic thing you’ve ever said to me”

– Rainbow Rowell, Fangirl

There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts.”

– Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist

On the kind of reader I am

As always, one of her books was next to her.”

– Markus Zusak, The Book Thief
