Where do I even begin? I am totally in love with this book. It is my go-to read whenever I find myself in a book slump and, even though I have lost count of how many times I’ve read it, Isla and the Happily Ever After never fails to entertain me. If I need a pick me up this is the book I reach for first. It is the perfect combination of cute/warm/fuzzy/heartfelt romance that you sometimes just need in your life.
With Paris and New York City as the backdrops for this story, I am just as in love with the setting as I am with the characters. If you have read Perkins other novel, Anna and the French Kiss, then you will see some familiar faces as well as many new ones. Isla is quiet, but she has a strong personality that the writing makes shine through. Josh is kind of a trouble-maker, but he cares deeply for Isla and you know he’s just angsty (aren’t we all?:)).
The relationship between Isla and Josh seems organic without being too dull. There is a nice build up to their relationship, and, of course, there is some romantic tension, and you feel invested in Isla and Josh’s relationship almost instantly. And while their relationship is central to the story, there are other significant and complex relationships between friends and family woven through the narrative as well that makes the story all the more convincing.
Isla and the Happily Ever After is not some profound, deep, overwhelming novel, but it is a great little read that I find very comforting and that I bring with me on every vacation because I never know when I am going to have the urge to read it again. Maybe the real beauty of this novel is that, for as many times as I have read it, I am still not bored of it and it still gives me that same little thrill that comes with reading a book for the first time no matter how many times I read it.
I give Isla and the Happily Ever After five stars because the book is everything I could ask for in a romance novel! The characters, the cities, the lovvvee — I’m obsessed! Fans of the romance genre — if you haven’t already, check this book out! Now that I’ve posted this review for the world to see (or the few visitors to my blog!) I feel I have done my duty to a book that I love so much. Give it a read!
